Making your carpet look and feel great under foot!
To enhance your new carpet we would recommend that a new underlay be purchased at the same time as your carpet. A new underlay not only reduces the effects of wear on a new carpet;
- A good quality underlay can prolong the life of a carpet by as much as 40%
- It can give your flooring a longer life
- Can reduce noise impact
- Helps to improve the efficiency of vacuuming
- Can reduce the effect of dust rising from floorboards which can soil carpets
- Reduces wear and can keep your carpet looking good for longer
- It improves the 'feel' of the carpet underfoot
- Increases heat and sound insulation aswell.
Should your floors be too uneven we would suggest plyboarding over a wooden floor or latex screeding a concrete floor to take out any undulations, we will be happy to undertake this should your floors require it.

There are many different styles of carpet available; we have listed below the different styles along with a brief description of the carpet style.
Berber carpets
The original Berber carpet was constructed with a loop pile from undyed Karakul wool. Berber carpets can be extremely hard wearing and have found a new born popularity more recently. A good quality wool Berber carpet has a tight loop and made from 100% wool. The term then began to be used across a much wider product range, with pile yarns made from either natural and synthetic fibres, or a mix of both. Although there are some exceptions where a wool/nylon mix has been used, but in our experience we have found that the pile tends to pill (fluff or bobble) in the cheaper mixes as the wool and manmade fibres do not knit together properly. Some of the 100% polypropylene Berber loop pile carpets are also suitable for heavy wear areas but beware of the cheaper polypropylene Berbers as they tend to flatten and show foot traffic/wear areas more.
Cut and Loop pile carpets
This description covers a variety of surface textures, and can roughly be translated as a sculptured effect. There are many carpets in this genre and qualities do vary. If you are looking for a cut and loop pile carpet it would be recommended to purchase as dense a pile as possible so that the carpet keeps its appearance longer. There are some cheaper budget cut and loop pile carpets produced that come in either hessian backed or with a felt backing. The ratio and positioning of the areas of cut and loop pile can be varied and the product can be either plain or over printed.
Flocked carpets or bonded carpets
These carpets are produced by electrically charging the fibres before dropping them into an electro static field. Where the fibres align themselves and are forced vertically into a binder film and finished with a gel backing. With the fine pile standing upright, a dense hard wearing carpet can be produced. A prime example of this type of carpet is 'Flotex' which has been around for many years and is suitable for both heavy domestic and contract locations.
Frieze pile carpets
The surface yarns of this style of carpet are tightly twisted to give a knobbly appearance.
Loop pile carpets
Loop pile carpets are primarily used for commercial applications as the only reliable construction for a loop pile carpet is with a short loop pile to avoid the loops from catching and snagging when the carpet pile is made with longer loops (especially with pet claws). The longer loop pile carpets tend to be softer in texture and are generally lower in price. Made from one fibre that runs the length of the carpet (bulked continuous filament) Bcf. for short. Imagine a knitted jumper where you have one thread looped through but if you catch one end and pull, it will pull right through (this is over simplified but a good example). However this is rare and as long as care is taken this can be avoided.
Multi-pile height carpets
Two and three pile height carpets achieve a geometric or scroll form of texture can be achieved by the use of an attachment to a tufting machine.
Needle punch or fibre bonded carpets
Needle punch carpet is more commonly known as needle felt carpet. They tend to be made up from a variety of fibre types which reduces the cost of raw materials and as such the finished carpet is generally cheaper. These carpets are produced when layers of loose fibres are passed under a row of fast moving needles with barbed points. These layers catch the fibres and punch them into a backing fabric to form a densely compressed felted or flat textured material. The carpet is then impregnated with resin or latex to complete the bonding. Needled fabrics can be embossed, printed and laminated to a cushioned backing material.
Plush pile carpets
This is a carpet made with a single level cut pile surface which is similar to a velvet pile but less dense and has a longer carpet pile. They are also generally made from manmade fibres and consequently cheaper than a velvet pile carpet.
Saxony pile carpets
Saxony carpets have a longer than average cut pile with individual tuft ends that are well defined and tight. With a dense deep pile Saxony carpets feel luxurious and soft under foot. Generally Saxony carpets are only produced in middle to top weight ranges and due to its construction can show foot traffic which can create an attractive looking natural pattern.
Shadow pile carpets
This is a random, swirling form of patterning, generally achieved through printing. Most shadow pile carpets are of cut or cut and loop construction.
Shag pile carpets
These styles of carpets have been very popular as rugs and have recently been experiencing renewed popularity, the shag pile length ranges from 2cm to 5cm. The main disadvantage with shag pile carpets is that unless the carpet surface is sufficiently dense, the tufts bend over, and the wear is experienced on the sides rather than the tops of the tufts.
Tip sheared carpets
With a tip sheared carpet the tips of some of the loops in a multi-height loop pile carpet are sheared to give a textured pattern.
Twist pile carpets
Twist pile carpets have a short pile are generally hard wearing and come in both plain and heather colours. A twist pile carpet tends to resist pilling (fluffing) or showing footprints. The greater the degree of twist in the surface yarn can result in a higher resistance to crushing. This makes twist pile carpets a good choice for higher traffic areas such as hall, stairs, landings and living rooms. A slight area of confusion could arise because all carpet yarns have a certain degree of twist in them - lightly in the case of velvets, tightly in the case of 'hard twists'. Some of the higher quality manufacturers twist two or three tufts together and then crop the pile resulting in a carpet with a very fine and dense finish resulting in a carpet that is more resilient to wear.
Velour
The terms velvets and velours are sometimes regarded as interchangeable, although velour is more often used as a description for a tufted carpet of short dense pile construction.
Velvets
This is a 'traditional' cut pile carpet with a short dense pile. Velvets are carpets that generally come in plain colours and are traditionally made of 100% wool yarn. (Our Wool Velvets range of carpets and Wool Twist pile carpets can be dyed to any colour required using modern dyeing methods. If a customer requires a special dye service, all we require is a sample of the colour required ie. a paint card or fabric sample which can be sent off to be matched. Once the dye sample has been matched we will send a swatch for confirmation by the customer and the carpet can be made to your own requirements once the colour is confirmed. This process takes approx 3 to 4 weeks from start to completion), Please ask for details.
